What am I? Who am I? - Part 1

By Britton Zirkle - Guest Writer

How I came to know what I am and who I am.

These are questions that everyone wants to answer and many people struggle with the difference between these two questions, but there is a difference and it’s important. In order to know the difference and really begin to make progress with the answers, we have to redefine the questions.

If you do what is says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

What am I?

This is a question of attributes, calling, talents, abilities, and things that are unique to us.  First and foremost I am a Christian. Whatever I was before I came to Christ, I no longer am. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here.”

This is incredibly important and when we fully understand and accept it, it makes a profound impact on how one answers the question, "what am I?" God blesses each of us with traits that are common to all believers and others that make us unique for the purpose He created us to fulfill.

There are traits that are given to all who accept the Lord and they produce the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

The Transformation

One of the most important transformations when we come to know the Lord and study His Word is that our mind begins to change. We become more aware of the world around us and begin to see people and events differently. We become better able to discern God’s will for our lives and what He has called us to do.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” - Romans 12:2 NLT

Unique Gifts Of The Spirit

There are also attributes that are unique to each of us. I cannot tell you what they are. If you struggle in discovering your gifts, ask God for insight, wisdom, and discernment in this area; take time to pray, meditate, and reflect on who you are in Christ. The answers will come, but it may take time and a deepening of your relationship with the Lord.

The answers will come, but it may take time and a deepening of your relationship with the Lord.

Whatever your unique traits are, they produce the fruit of the Spirit and reveal what we are. As followers of Christ, we are all servants of the Living God created to serve the Lord and mankind according to our unique gifts. For me, I am called to serve through my family. The Lord has made me complete with the ability and desire to be a strong husband and father leading my family ever closer to Christ.
“We are therefore, Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.  We implore you on Christ’s behalf: be reconciled to God.” - 2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV
