How Do We Establish Our Thoughts?

Paul taught us that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. We see that the process of our sanctification occurs in the mind and specific to not only "what" we think, but "how" we think. So how do we establish our thoughts?

A mad dash to the 'beginning' of our life!

In the book of Proverbs we have a wonderful command from the Lord teaching us a great way to do this.

If we commit our works to the Lord, then our thoughts will be established. - Proverbs 16:3 NLT

We want our thoughts and our thought process to be like the Lords. There is a way of thinking that is very different from the thinking we learned in this world. This a pretty straight forward action step to get us there. The idea is to commit our work to the Lord and the result is thinking like Jesus thinks.

There is no way to really understand how this works until you do it. Jesus always thought and reasoned in terms of living forever. How is that mindset different from the mindset of "live like you were dying," or the mindset of "completing my bucket list?"

Those objectives, or rather, that kind of mindset has a hard stop. It's a thought process that thinks to get to the end of something. A static conclusion to our existence. It's a mad dash to the end of our life. We want a mindset where we are on a mad dash to the beginning of our life! Can you see the difference?

For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. - 1 Peter 1:23 NLT

So, let's see what the Lord is talking about. Let's think differently. Let's commit all our works to the Lord and experience His way of thinking.

Take Action!

What is a great way to establish your thoughts?
That's right! Commit your works to the Lord.
1. Make a quick brainstorm list on ways you can commit your works to the Lord.
  • Write them down. What other scriptures talk about how we can think like Jesus thinks?
  • Remember that when you're brainstorming it's helpful to stretch your thinking. Go ahead and write down a few "way outside the box" ideas!
2. Ask other Christians how they do it.
  • "Hey Jim, what comes to mind when you think of committing your work to the Lord?"
3. Once you get your list put it up in prayer.
4. Most importantly, act on them!
  • It is wise not to try to do everything on your list all at once. Remember that becoming an expert comes with practice. Start with a few small things and work your way up to the heavy lifting.
How we think is as important as what we think. A renewed mind does not think like the world thinks... it thinks like the Lord thinks. There are great strategies to develop this kind of thinking and committing our work to the Lord is a great place to start.
Here are few resources to help develop your strategy:
